The White House has received a large number of (##)elegrams addressed to President Truman protesting Britain’s decision to return the (##),400 Exodus refugees to Germany and urging him to use his influence to provent this action from being carried out, it was learned here today. The telegrams have been turned over to the State Department.
B’nai B’rith made public today an appeal it had sent to President Truman urg(##) him “as a friend of humanity,” to prevent such “a calamitous action.” The appeal, signed by Frank Goldman, president, declared that the British decision is an incomprehensible and shocking” move.
Rep. Emanuel Celler, after calling on the President in connection with the (##)mdus incident, told newsmen that “President Truman has ample basis for action to (##)vent banishment of these Jews to a German ‘Devil’s Island.’ Sericus repercus(##)ion will result if the British carry out their threat.
The Zionist Organization of America today assailed Britain’s deportation of (##)he Exodus refugees to Germany as a “Nazi-like and monstrously inhuman action,” in (##) appeal to the U.S. Government to halt the British action. The American Jewish Congress asserted that the imprisonment of the Jews in German concentration camps (##)rought the world back to the 1930’s, when Hitler was acting in a similar manner.
