The first plea directed to the Jews of the United States since the reconstitution of the United Jewish Appeal was issued here today by Isidor Coons and Henry Montor, executive vice-chairman of the UJA, asking 4,600 Jewish communities throughout the country to give prompt support to the U. J.A. campaign.
Pointing out that the estimated needs of the Joint Distribution Committee, the United Palestine Appeal and the National Refugee Service this year exceed $80,000,000, the appeal said: “American Jews hold the key to the future of the Jewish people who have been the victims of twelve years of indescribable suffering and horror. It is earnestly hoped that governmental and inter-governmental bodies will extend increasing assistance to all victims of Hitler’s war against humanity. Until that day comes, however, the agencies of the United Jewish Appeal must fulfill their solemn responsibility to sustain large numbers of Jews requiring aid in France, Belgium, Holland, Rumania, Hungary, Poland. Bulgaria and other lands, who are in immediate need of emergency relief during the transition period, and to lay the foundations for the rehabilitation of great masses of them in the Jewish National Home.”
