The first recreation center to be established in Newfoundland for American soldiers was opened last week in the reception hall of the Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in St. Johns under the sponsorship of the National Jewish Welfare Board, it was announced today by John M. Schiff, Chairman of the Board’s Army and Navy Committee.
The club rooms, operated in cooperation with the USO, will be for the use of all men on duty in Newfoundland and will be open daily except Friday. Local residents have volunteered to keep a nightly entertainment program going and Newfoundland girls will be on hand to serve as hostesses. Free refreshments are served throughout the week and there will be a monthly dinner-dance.
