The International Red Cross and the American Friends Service Committee will be asked by the U.N. Conciliation Commission’s technical subcommittee on refugees to conduct a census of displaced Arabs, it was revealed today.
In its first report to the Commission at Lausanne, the subcommittee reviewed its findings on the question of Arab-owned orange groves in Israel and on “practical possibilities for the repatriation and resettlement of the refugees in Arab countries.” The committee toured refugee and other areas in Transjordan, Lebanon, Syria, Egypt and Israel.
The committee plans to visit Bethlehem and Hebron today and will proceed to Amman tomorrow to check the absorptive capacity of Transjordan as well as to discuss with that country’s officials technical problems surrounding the Israeli Government’s proposal to reunite displaced Arab families in the Jewish state.
