The International Red Cross conference which concluded here recently did not receive any application for membership from the Magen David Adom of Israel, it was reported here today.
According to Dr. W.S. Stenbury. Canadian National Commissioner for the Red Cross, only a diplomatic conference could approve the red Shield of David as an emblem of the Magen David Adom in Israel. The question of recognizing the Jewish symbol was therefore “beyond the competence of the International Red Cross conference,” he explained.
Israel’s observers at the conference included Pinhas Eliav, David Goitein and Col. Chaim Herzog, of the Israel Embassy in Washington; Lt. Col. Aryeh Harrel, of the Israel Army medical corps; and Dr. Nathan M. Wolff, of the Magen David Adom organization.
