The American Red Cross today announced receipt of a $1,000 check from B’nai B’rith for impartial war relief in Europe. At the same time, Chairman Norman H. Davis said that the critical need for clothing of Polish war refugees has caused the Red Cross to set up a tremendous garment production program within its chapters.
The check for the Red Cross was presented by Maurice Bisgyer, secretary of B’nai B’rith, to Eliot Wadworth, vice-chairman of the Red Cross Committee on War Relief. Bisgyer said the amount had been allocated from the National Emergency Fund of B’nai B’rith following action of President Henry Monsky and the Executive Committee.
Word of the increased need of Polish refugees reached Washington today. A Red Cross commission is now making a survey of needs in Latvia, Hungary, Lithuania and Rumania.
To provide clothing for 80,000 Poles forced to flee their native land, American Red Cross chapters are asked to produce 220,000 heavy dresses and 137,000 sweaters. Distribution will be supervised by the International Red Cross in Geneva.
Shipments of clothing will begin in two weeks and will continue as adequate cargo space develops, it was explained. Transportation difficulties arising because of shortage of cargo space in Europe-bound vessels have been lightened considerably, the Red Cross learned over the weekend.
