A religious congregation in Ciudad Trujillo, Dominican Republic, organized by German Jewish refugees almost immediately upon their arrival there, now has a membership of 150 and a fully-planned program of religious service and education, according to word received by the United Synagogue of America.
President of the new synagogue, which has been named Centro Israelita, is Simon Rothschild, former food salesman from Germany. Rabbi H. Ucko, the spiritual leader and teacher of the Centro Israelita, is a survivor of the S.S. Simon Bolivar, which was mined in the North Sea last November 18th.
The Agudath Israel announced the sending of matzoth, two Scrolls of the Law, a number of prayer books and other religious articles to Ciudad Trujillo, in reply to a request from Rabbi Joseph Steinmetz there.
