Several thousand Jewish refugees from German territories who hold visas for the United States and Latin American countries are stranded in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Italy because they lack steamship fare. Many face the danger that their visas will expire and will not be renewed if they are not provided with passage.
A delegation of Jewish leaders from Antwerp arrived in Paris to appeal to central Jewish relief organizations to aid stranded emigrants. The delegation revealed that those stranded in Antwerp alone included 200 holders of American quota visas which were about to expire. Similar is the situation of many refugees in other countries, holding United States and Latin American visas.
The general situation of the 15,000 Jewish refugees in Belgium was termed by the delegation “very critical” since none of them is permitted to work and each receives only about $1 weekly for food and shelter.
