The government’s proposed Jewish rehabilitation bill is ready to be submitted to the Hungarian cabinet council and the parliament it is reported today by the Budapost press.
The bill provides that the property of all Jews who died heirless and which is acquired by the government between June 26, 1941 and December 31, 1950 shall be turned over to the Jewish Rehabilitation Fund to be administered jointly by the government and a special committee. Three-fourths or the committee members will be chosen by Jewish community representatives while the remaining quarter will be appointed by the Premier. The bill also provides for reduced inheritance taxes on the estates of victims of the Nazis or their relatives.
Declaring that racial and religious discrimination is “foreign barbarism,” the bill pays homage to the suffering of the Jews and tribute to those Hungarians who risked their lives to help the Jews. It promises to help destitute Jews to the greatest extent possible under the present economic condition.
