Rehabilitation plans to aid some 8,000 Jews in Italy and Rumania attain economic independence were announced here today by Moses A. Leavitt, executive vice-chairman of the Joint Distribution Committee.
A total of $450,000 has been set aside for this project, including a special $50,000 allocation for establishing a credit cooperative in Milan. The over-all program calls for strengthening existing cooperatives and setting up new ones, particularly for Jewish skilled workers, professional men and merchants.
The major portion of the appropriation will go towards the formation of 35 producers cooperatives in Rumania which will employ 2,500 family heads, most of whom are engaged in shoe-making, tailoring and woodwork. In addition, the cooperatives will offer extensive apprentice training.
