The Union of Jewish Front Soldiers issued a manifesto today advising Jewish youths of conscrition age to file their petitions with the military authorities for permission to serve Germany.
The manifesto was issued despite the fact that the conscription regulations make it clear that Jews will not be admitted to the army.
The filing of such petitions is necessary in order to assert the inalienable rights of the Jewish population in Germany, the manifesto states.
ARMY BAR EMPHASIZED
At the same time the West deutscher Beobachter, the leading Nazi organ in Western Germany, came out today with an article on the conscription, emphasizing that Jews should not expect that they will ever be admitted to military service.
“Military service is a service of honor which is only for Germans and not for Jews,” the paper writes.
The exclusion of Jews from military service was also the subject of a lecture delivered at Freiburg University by Prof. Erich Wolf, a member of the faculty. “Military service is not a privilege but a responsibility,” Prof. Wolf said. “It is not desired that this responsibility should be carried by people of alien race, although the same people may continue to enjoy unrestricted legal protection in trade and unhindered exercise in their religion.”
