Over twenty thousand volumes by Jewish authors have been collected in Berlin alone to be fed the monster bonfire tomorrow in the Opera Square. The volumes were seized from private libraries and collections throughout the city, by enthusiastic Nazi student groups, and were contributed by sympathizers eager to aid in the “purification” of German culture through the destruction of literary and scientific works which have previously ranked among the glories of German thought.
Max Liebermann resigned yesterday as president emeritus of the Prussian Academy of Art, because he said his conception of art was not in accordance with that proclaimed by the Nazis and which henceforth must guide artists in the Reich. A Jew, Liebermann had been a member of the Academy for thirty years.
