A declaration defining the position of the former mandated territory of Palestine in relation to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade–GATT–was adopted today by the contracting parties to the GATT on a session at Annecy, France.
The declaration agreed that the United Kingdom should be regarded as having ceased to be the contracting party with respect to the customs territory formerly included in the Palestine Mandate. Any contracting party therefore would be free to withhold or to withdraw, in whole or in part any concession included in the appropriate GATT schedule which was formally negotiated with the United Kingdom in respect of the territory of the Palestine Mandate.
In the terms of the declaration, any contracting party proposing to take such action will notify all other contracting parties and, if requested, will consult with the contracting parties which have a substantial interest in any product concerned.
