The problem of relief for Europe’s Jewish survivors “is being replaced by the challenge of resettlement and reconstruction,” former Gov. Herbert H. Lehman declared here tonight at a meeting of the Combined Jewish Appeal of Chicago.
After reviewing the heroic struggle of the Jews of Israel against Arab invasion, Lehman said that the reason the displaced Jews of Europe want to immigrate to Israel is clear. “When one visits the DP camps, when one talks with the homeless Jews of Europe, when one sees the wretched squalor in which most of them live, when one sees the hostility and anti-Semitism that surrounds the Jews in Germany, when one sees the drastic economic dislocation in many of the countries where Jewish survivors live–their decision to build new homes and new lives in Israel is clearly the only one that they can take,” he declared.
