Aid granted the victims of the Palestine outbreak from the Palestine Emergency Fund will be regarded as loans, the acceptance of which will not imply the abandonment of claims against the government. In announcing this arrangement, Dr. Leonard Stein, political representative of the Zionist Executive, declared that it has been made abundantly clear that the Palestine government cannot repudiate its liability on the pretext that relief funds are being collected by the Jewish public.
Over £300,000 (approximately $1,500,00) has been raised for the relief fund to date. The success of the collection, which provided a magnificent demonstration of Jewish feeling, the Executive declared, was due considerably to its centralization. Most important, however, is the continuation of constructive work. The situation calls for activity intensified tenfold and the strengthening of immigration.
The Emergency Fund will continue until October 15, when the Jewish National Fund and the Palestine Foundation Fund will resume their normal fund collections.
Declaring that all relief campaigns in the United States were discontinued for the present, in deference to the Palestine Emergency Fund, Rabbi Meyer Berlin, announced that the campaign will be concluded the day after Yom Kippur, October 14. Not a single point destroyed during the disturbances will be left waste, Rabbi Berlin declared. On the contrary, all, including Hebron, will be rebuilt. Where it is impossible to leave isolated points with a small population, the settlements will be enlarged and strengthened.
