The statement, in part, expresses concern “at the present juncture over the situation in Mexico, where many unprejudiced observers report that in the endeavor to achieve social justice and political reform otherwise desirable, religious liberty is being imperiled… While refraining from discussing the immediate issues at stake in the controversies in Mexico, we desire to give our moral support to those who labor for freedom of worship there, and to express the anxiety with which we view every threat to liberty of conscience and the freedom of the soul.”
The decision to circulate the statement was made at a meeting of the executive council of the conference last month under the chairmanship of Newton D. Baker, co-leader of the conference with Prof. Carlton J. H. Hayes and Roger W. Straus. The statement was presented by Dr. E. R. Clinchy, director of the conference.
