The remains of over 300 Jewish soldiers who fell in the defense of the Kfar Etzion group of settlements, south of Jerusalem, in the Latrun battles and in the vicinity of the Kiryat Anavim radar station, also in the Jerusalem area, were today given a heroes’ burial at the national cemetery on Mt. Herzl. The graves were placed less than 1,000 feet from that of Theodor Herzl, founder of modern Zionism.
Present at the services were: Minister of Supply Dov Joseph and Minister of Immigration Moshe Shapira, representing the government; Army Chief of Staff Brig. Yigal Yadin; Chief Rabbis Isaac Herzog and Ben Zion Uziel; and Army Chief Chaplain Rabbi M. Goren. Rabbi Goren, who did much of the work involved in collecting the remains, expressed horror at the “disgusting and uncivilized” treatment of the corpses–some of which were not even buried–by the Arabs.
