A special plane carrying the remains of Dr. Mordecai Eliash, Israel Minister to Britain who died in London Saturday, landed at Lydda airport this afternoon and was met by high-ranking officials of the Israel Government, members of the diplomatic corps stationed in the Jewish state and rabbinical and lay Jewish leaders. The coffin was immediately transferred to Jerusalem and placed at the Yeshurun Synagogue.
Among these present when the plane landed at Lydda were U.S. Ambassador James G. McDonald, British Minister Alexender Knox Helm, Argentine Minister Pablo Manguel, and the diplomatic envoys of Australia and Belgium; Chief Rabbis Untermann and Toledano, of Tel Aviv; Col. Arnon, representing President Chaim Weizmann; Lt. Col. Avitzur, representing the Israel Army Chief of Staff, Brig. Yigal Yadin; Foreign Minister Moshe Sharett and Walter Eytan, director-general of the Foreign Ministry.
When Dr. Eliash’s coffin was removed from the plans, it was draped with the Israel flag. A police guard of honor presented arms as the casket was transferred to a hearse. Mr. Sharett and senior officials of the Foreign Ministry accompanied the cortege to Jerusalem, where burial will take place tomorrow morning in the Sanhedria cematery. The funeral services will be held at the Yeshurun Synagogue, of which Dr. Eliash was a trustee.
