Rep. Robert Taft, Jr., who is seeking the Republican Senatorial nomination from Ohio, declared today at a press conference here that “on the Middle East, I am on record as supporting direct talks between Israel and the Arab nations as the only realistic approach to lasting peace there.” Rep. Taft said he had been in communication with President Nixon, seeking clarification on American policy. He praised Mr. Nixon’s recent statements on the Middle East.
