Reports reaching the West Bank from Amman today said that Jordanian Premier Wasfi Tal has tendered his resignation and that King Hussein has accepted it. Tal, who succeeded Ahmed Touqan last fall, reportedly advised King Hussein that he thought his resignation would pave the way for a resolution of the country’s financial crisis and a reconciliation with Egypt. Arab affairs experts noted that Tal has been one of the pillars of King Hussein’s tough policy against the Palestinian terror organizations–a policy that has led to the suspension of the annual $105 million subsidy to those organizations by Libya and Kuwait and the alienation of Egypt from Jordan. The Cairo government recently withdrew its representative to the Pan-Arab Control Committee in Jordan, Gen. Salim Hilmy, as an expression of displeasure with Amman. Arab affairs experts said today that while King Hussein might sacrifice his Premier, he was not likely to change his policy.
