Official recognition of the Jewish school system in Palestine and the granting of more money to both Arab and Jewish educational institutions were recommended today in a report issued by an inquiry commission appointed in August, 1945.
The report also urged scholarships for elementary-school pupils, provisions for compulsory free education, a grant to the Hebrew University for training teachers and youth leaders and revised salary scales and a pension fund for teachers.
Issued by the Colonial Office, the report said that since there are no contacts between Jewish and Arab education, education in Palestine does not work as a unifying force between the two groups. The report has high praise for the “remarkable achievements” of Jewish education despite adverse factors.
