The Jewish position in Poland, Rumania and the Free City of Danzig was reported increasingly grave at a conference today of the Joint Foreign Committee, representing the Board of Deputies of British Jews and the Anglo-Jewish Association.
Continued unchecked, violent anti-Jewish propaganda by the Nationalists and National Radicals, an outlawed party, was blamed for the situation in Poland. The propaganda, it was stated, is leading to continuous rioting in nearly all the country’s higher schools. Attempts to exclude Jews from Warsaw, Cracow and Lublin bar associations were reported to the committee.
The Jewish position in Danzing has deteriorated in every direction, the conference was told. An economic boycott against Danzig Jews, it was stated, is being sustained by Nazi threats against non-Jews who attempt to deal with Jews. As a result, Jewish poverty is increasing and the community is unable to meet the growing demands for relief, the report declared.
Unchecked anti-Semitic agitation in Rumania has caused anxiety among the Jews of that country, it was reported to the conference. Apprehension has also been stimulated, it was declared, by the Government’s recent order for revision of naturalization requirements which, if carried out, may result in the loss of Rumanian citizenship for many Jews formerly nationals of Hungary and Russia.
