Reports that the Italian Government is preparing to facilitate settlement of Jews in part of Ethiopia brought a reply from authoritative circles in Rome that the possibility of such a project is not excluded, The Sun reported today. A final decision has not yet been reached, but the impression is general that some scheme for Jewish settlement will be forthcoming, the dispatch said.
A dispatch from Arnaldo Cortesi, Rome correspondent of the times, said that a definite plan for hastening the colonization of Ethiopia by making it a place of refuge for Italian Jews, and perhaps later Jews from other countries, was seen as “a practical possibility.” Authoritative Italian circles admitted that the decree for expulsion of Jews was framed so as to leave Ethiopia out of its scope, the times said. It was pointed out that restrictions on transfer of capital by emigrating Jews would not apply to those going to Ethiopia.
