A prominent Hungarian Jew is now in the Middle East for the purpose of conveying to the Allies a German offer to release the eliminated 400,000 Jews remaining in Hungary in exchange for non-military supplies it is reported here today. It is understood that Britain has notified Russia of the German proposals, but that no decision has been reached as yet.
At the same time, liberal circles here are demanding that Britain and the United States act to save the Jews of Hungary by, first, bombing the extermination camps of Oswiecim and Birkenau in Poland, and, second, by conferring citizenship on the Hungarian Jews. It was reported last week that certain neutral countries have already issued passports to some Hungarian Jews enabling them to avoid deportation.
Today’s reports came in the wake of an announcement by the International Red Cross in Berne that it has been informed by Admiral Horthy, Regent of Hungary, that there will be no further deportations of Jews and that he will permit the Red Cross to evacuate all Jewish children and also all adults who possess Palestine visas. The announcement added that the Red Cross had succeeded in obtaining unrestricted transit through Axis-controlled countries for all such refugees.
