One out of every five Jews in Germany today is completely dependent upon relief it was stated yesterday at a luncheon of the women’s division of the United Jewish Appeal at the Hotel Commodore. The statement was made by Joseph C. Hyman, honorary secretary of the Appeal and secretary of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee.
The luncheon was attended by leaders of the various women’s groups interested in raising $200,000 as their share of the $1,250,000 fund which is being sought here for the aid of the Jews of Germany and other lands and for their settlement in Palestine. Mrs. Max J. H. Rossbach presided. Others who spoke were Mrs. Richard Percy Limburg, chairman of the women’s division, Mrs. Felix M. Warburg and I. Edwin Goldwasser, co-chairman of the Greater New York City campaign.
According to reports received in this country from the Zentral Ausschuz, the relief dispensing organization in Germany through which the Joint Distribution Committee is carrying on its program of help, Mr. Hyman announced that last year more than 100,000 free meals were distributed by the Berlin kitchens and in addition 11,000 food packages were given away. He also said that more than 75,000 applications for economic aid were made to this organization by Jews ### country, 10,000 of these being cases in Berlin.
BRONX DRIVE OPENS JUNE 12
Bronx Jewry will launch its Appeal campaign at a dinner June 12 at the Concourse Plaza Hotel, it was announced yesterday by Abraham Krasne, chairman of the Bronx division of the Appeal. One thousand men and women prominent in communal, civic, and Jewish activities of the borough are expected to attend. Nathan Straus, former state director of the National Emergency Council, will be the guest of honor at the dinner.
Final arrangements were completed for this dinner last night at a meeting of the Bronx committee held at the Hotel Milburn. Representatives of Bronx Jewish organizations were present. I Teitelbaum and Mr. Krasne presided.
{SPAN}###{/SPAN} INDUSTRY GROUPS TO COMPLETE ORGANIZATION
Leaders of five industries in the women’s wear field will complete their organization work in interest of the United Jewish Appeal this {SPAN}###{/SPAN} it was announced yesterday.
The coat and suit division will hold a luncheon tomorrow at the Hotel Pennsylvanit at which I. Edwin Goldwasser and Michael Schaap will be the speakers.
The dress industry will hold a luncheon Friday at the Hotel New Yorker. Billy Avirutine is chairman. Jack Davis, Barney Joseph, and Murray Weisbart are helping him on the committee. Adolph Feldblum is the impartial chairman of the dress industry and will be a speaker.
The leather goods group will meet at a luncheon tomorrow at the Hotel McAlpin. Samuel Goldsmith ### chairman, Sol Mutterperl and ### Schoenfeld, co-chairmen.
