Eleven Jews, residents of the city of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, have been arrested and will be deported from the country, and 19 are being sought by the police for deportation, Chaim Reber, who fled from Santo Domingo, declared on his arrival in Havana today.
A rumor spread through the city of Santo Domingo that these Jews who came here from Cuba were responsible for the downfall of the Machado regime in Cuba. According to the story, the Jews came to Santo Domingo in order to overthrow the dictatorship established by General Trujillo, who rules the Dominican Republic.
Eleven of the thirty are already under arrest and are to be deported in the near future to the border of Haiti. All of the men who were arrested were compelled to leave their possessions behind and are now penniless.
Police are searching for the other 19 and when they are found they will also be deported.
Reber, bringing word from the Jews already arrested, declared they sought the intervention of American Jewish organizations in the hope that deportation of the remainder and further action against the Jews in the Dominican Republic might be stayed.
