All Italian newspapers give prominence to reports of an Anglo-Jewish accord for establishment of a Palestine Jewish state.
Editorial comment is sparse, however. La Tribuna calls the alleged accord the “dream of the lion,” saying that “while German artillery was being directed at it from the other side of the Channel, the lion dreamed of a super-empire of which the Kingdom of Judaea will also be a part.”
The Italian Government, in a statement on Feb. 16, 1938, through the publication Diplomatic Information, favored establishment of a Jewish State outside of Palestine. A solution of this sort, commented Virginio Gayda, chief Fascist press spokesman, “would legitimize, in certain ways, successive actions of different governments for the expulsion of Jews within their territories.”
