President Roosevelt would be authorized by Congress to proclaim October 28 – the 55th anniversary of the dedication of the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor – as “Statue of Liberty Day” to “rededicate the American people, especially the foreign born, to American concepts of Liberty, “under terms of a resolution introduced by Representative Samuel Dickstein, Chairman of the House Committee on Immigration and Naturalization.
The resolution, which was introduced by Dickstein at the behest of the American Committee for the Protection of the Foreign Born, asks the President to call upon Federal and State officials to display the American flag on all state and government buildings on October 28, and to invite the people of the United States to observe the day with appropriate ceremonies. The measure was referred to the House Judiciary Committee for action.
