Senior officers of leading American banks in ten cities are leaving for Israel tomorrow to participate in the 1959 Jewish Agency Bankers Study Mission, it was announced here today by Gottlieb Hammer, executive director of the Jewish Agency, who organized the group. The present mission is part of a continuing program begun in 1949.
The group, which is visiting Israel at the invitation of the Jewish Agency, will study the country’s economic and industrial development as well as its immigration and colonization program. During their stay, members of the mission will be given the opportunity to observe the operations of the Jewish Agency in the fields of rehabilitation, housing and agricultural development and to study problems facing the Agency.
All of the banks represented in this year’s Study Mission have cooperated with local Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds in refunding loan projects benefitting the nationwide United Jewish Appeal’s resettlement and rehabilitation program in Israel.
Mr. Hammer, who is also the president of the American-Israeli Shipping Company, announced today the appointment of W.R. Lazarus, of Haifa, as executive vice-president of the company, which represents the Zim Israel Navigation Company in the United States. Mr. Lazarus has been in the shipping industry in various capacities for 23 years. He will succeed Mr. Arieh Chowers, executive vice-president of the American-Israeli Shipping Company since 1955, who is returning to Israel.
