Six Republican Congressmen who have waited in vain for White House support of amendments they wish to sponsor to revise the McCarran-Walter Act today requested House Judiciary chairman Chauncey W. Reed to hold hearings on their proposed legislation.
The signers of the letter to chairman Reed requesting the hearings were Representatives Jacob K. Javits, New York, Albert W. Cretella, Conn., Paul A. Fino, New York, Peter Frelinghuysen, Jr., N. J., Albert P. Morano, Conn., and Hugh Scott, Penna. In their letter they said to chairman Reed that “we trust these amendments may have the early attention of your committee.” The letter said:
“Our immigration policy is of great significance as it relates directly to the foreign affairs of the United States. This measure, by removing certain unjustices in our present immigration legislation, would contribute substantially toward the success of American efforts to win the support and friendship of peoples abroad. We wish also to call your attention to the campaign pledge and the repeated statements of President Eiserhower in which he said that justice required the rewriting of the McCarran-Walter Act.”
