Sen. Gordon L. Allott, of Colorado, chairman of the Republican Senate Policy Committee, today became the 19th Senator to support a resolution calling on the Soviet Government to permit Jews to emigrate from the USSR. The resolution, introduced by Sen. William E. Brock (R., Tenn.), also asks the State Department to protest in the United Nations against Soviet transgression of the Declaration of Human Rights. “The monstrous persecution of Jews under the Third Reich should have taught us that world opinion must be obliged early and energetically on behalf of minorities suffering at the hands of a despotic government and that such minorities must be granted the right to emigrate,” Allott said. He suggested that freedom of mobility be added to the “Four Freedoms” proclaimed at the outset of World War II. “It is altogether proper for the U.S., a nation of immigrants, to affirm this point on behalf of the oppressed Jews of the Soviet Union.” the senator said.
