The resettlement of the 250,000 Jewish displaced persons in Europe is the major problem facing relief organizations, Edward M.M. Warburg and Dr. Joseph C. Schwartz, chairman and European director, respectively, of the J.D.C., said here today before they left for the United States, via London, to attend the national United Jewish Appeal conference opening in Atlantic City on Friday.
They emphasized at the same time that the J.D.C. must expand its work in Europe to furnish extensive training to Jewish youth. “We must rebuild a healthy structure for the Jewish people, so that they can become a vital force in European society,” Mr. Warburg said. “Making useful citizens is our task in the coming year.”
The relief leaders, who have just completed a tour of Jewish communities in central and eastern Europe and of DP camps, paid tribute to the understanding shown the Jews by governmental leaders in the various countries they visited and U.S. military authorities in Germany and Austria. They stressed, however, that now countries, including Palestine, must be found in which to resettle those Jews who wish to leave Europe.
