Right-wing and Centre groups in the Tel Aviv administration today demanded the resignation of Moshe Chelouche, newly-elected mayor.
Representatives of twenty groups comprising the Centre Bloc met and voted to support Israel Rokach, the vice-mayor, although Chelouche was elected by an 8 – 7 vote of the Municipal Council Tuesday to succeed the late Meier Dizengoff.
The decided to issue a proclamation giving Mr. Chelouche his last opportunity to resign and warning that otherwise elements of the population would be compelled to consider “a war declaration.” The resolution denounced him as a “tool of the Histadruth,” the Jewish federation of labor.
Vice-Mayor Rokach is acting as mayor pending a decision by High Commissioner Sir Arthur Grenfell Wauchope to settle the disputed mayoralty.
