Six million aliens in the United States will be excluded from representation in Congress if efforts to pass the Anti-Alien amendment to the Census Reapportionment bill prove successful. In the debate in the House of Representatives it was charged by Representative Schafer, Republican, of Wisconsin, that the Ku Klux Klan and the dry forces are behind the measure. A vote on the measure will probably be taken this week.
At present the entire population, including eliens, is reckoned in estimating the number of representatives to which the various Congressional districts are entitled.
That there are 3,000,000 aliens unlawfully in the United States was charged by Congressman Rankin of Mississippi, senior Democratic member of the House Committee on Census which recently reported the bill to the House. They should be excluded from the census count, he declared because “they are here against our will, in violation of our laws and subject to be deported at any time. Not only that, but among them are the most criimnal aliens who come to our shores.”
Congressman Rankin’s figures were challenged by Congressman La Guardia of New York. When told they were supplied by the Department of Labor, Congressman La Guardia declared: If these facts and figures are true, it was the duty of the Secretary of Labor to start deportation proceeding.
