Restitution of Jewish property in Hungary depends on return of Hungarian and Jewish property and assets now being held by the Allies, Foreign Minister John Gyoengyoesi today told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.
Gyoengyoise said that the difference between the Government’s view and that of the Jews was that the Hungarian administration believed in compensation on an individual basis, while the Jews desired collective restitution. The Foreign Minister declared that under the new property restitution law before the parliament Jews will be compensated in cases where it is impossible to return their land. He urged patience on the part of the Jews pleading that the economic position of the Government prevented realization of its desire to make restitution.
