Reconstruction of the Rashi Synagogue, the house of worship and study founded in the eleventh century by the famed Biblical and Talmudic commentator Rabbi Shlomo Ben-Yitzhak, will be completed this fall, it was announced here today by Worms Municipality, which is carrying out the project jointly with the Rhineland-Pfalz state government.
The cost of reconstruction of the historic building, which was destroyed by the Nazis on the infamous Crystal Night in November 1938, is estimated at 300,000 deutschemarks ($75,000). Most of the valuable ritual objects housed in the synagogue were saved by Christian friends of the Jewish community.
The Worms Municipality also announced completion of the renovation of the old Jewish cemetery in the city. The burial ground was badly damaged in a bombing attack during the Second World War.
