“The withdrawal of Sir Herbert Samuel from his post as High Commissioner of Palestine at the present time would be most unfortunate”, said Dr. David Yellin last night at a reception in his honor given by the Zionist Organization of America and the Keren Hayesod.
“Let us note that a High Commissioner who is Jewish is needed to equilibrate the situation in Palestine. The population is largely Moslem. The Government is Christian. The least we could ask then is that the High Commissioner should be a Jew.
“Both the agricultural and industrial development of Palestine depend as yet on the assistance of American money,” he said. “This is needed in industry in the form of credits and investment.”
Over 3,000 people crowded the north ballroom of the Hotel Astor to welcome the distinguished Palestinian scholar. Miss Henrietta Szold. acting chairman of the Zionist Organization of America, opened the meeting and greeted Dr. Yellin in English and in Hebrew.
Reubin Brainin, Hebrew writer; David Tannenbaum, chairman of the New York Zionist Council; Nathan Straus and Dr. Stephen S. Wise, at whose invitation Dr. Yellin came to America to lecture at the Jewish Institute of Religion, welcomed the guest.
