United Nations Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold and Maj. Gen. E.L.M. Burns, commander-in-chief of the UN Emergency Force in Egypt, have both told Israeli authorities that there is no way of preventing the entry of Egyptian forces into the Sinai Peninsula in the wake of the UNEF units which are taking over from the evacuating Israeli troops. This was learned in authoritative circles here yesterday.
Commenting on reports from UN headquarters in New York that Mr. Hammarskjold had promised that no Egyptian troops would be allowed into the Sinai Peninsula, sources close to the Foreign Ministry insisted that no such assurances had been received from the Secretary General. However, Gen. Burns has reported to the Israelis that as of now there are the Egyptian troops in the peninsula.
It is understood that Mr. Hammarskjold has been pressing Israel to evacuate further areas of the Sinai soon. A second meeting between Gen. Burns and Israel Army Chief of Staff Maj. Gen. Moshe Dayan is likely to take place this week to discuss additional details of the UN take-over operation.
