A report of the situation in regard to the land settlement of Jews in Russia, declaring the colonization to be successful is contained in a cable from Reuben Brainin, honorary vice-president of the Zionist Organization of America, published in “The Day” of yesterday.

The cable, dated from Simferopol, Russia, states: “I have visited a number of important Jewish centers, such as Homel, Vitebsk. Ekaterinaslav and others and was staggered by the sight of the terrible poverty of the Jewish masses in these places.

“Together with Professor Chavkin of Paris, Dr. Maurice Hexter of Boston, Mr. Fuchs, president of the Moscow Kehillah, Dr. Linder, representative of the Kehillah in Leningrad, Dr. Joseph Rosen, director of the Agrojoint, the agency in Russia of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee and his assistant, Mr. Lubarsky, I have visited the Jewish colonies in Cherson and Crimea. I was surprised at the remarkable success made by the Jewish colonists there in such a comparatively brief period. This success is due, in the first place, to the inexhaustable energies of the colonists, who are not daunted by any difficulties or obstacles. It is also due to the cooperation and material assistance of the Soviet government and especially to the extraordinary efforts of the Agrojoint organization. A particularly good impression is made by the ability and devotion of the young agronomists who put their whole soul and their entire energy into the work of helping to develop the new colonization,” Mr. Brainian states in his cable.
