Two Israeli machines which are expected to revolutionize the diamond polishing industry were demonstrated at the Haifa Conference on Mechanical Engineering. The machines were developed at the Haifa Technion’s Diamond Research Laboratory by Professor Yeshaya Yarnitsky of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. One of the machines flawlessly grinds and polishes the angled faces of a diamond. Until now, skilled workers had to sit at a revolving wheel and press onto it the diamond which is to be given polished faces. With the new grinder-polisher, four diamonds can be handled by one revolving wheel while a semi-skilled worker supervises a group of such wheels. The second machine rounds and shines diamonds.
