The Rhodesian Jewish Board of Deputies, central representative body of the Jewish communities of North and South Rhodesia in south central Africa, has become an affiliate of the World Jewish Congress, according to an announcement by Dr. Nahum Goldmann, acting president of the W. J. C. and Dr. Isaac Schwarzbart, director of its organization department.
One of the few Jewish communities outside Israel which have grown substantially through immigration in recent years, Rhodesia has approximately 9,500 Jews, with the majority living in the Southern Rhodesian centers of Bulawayo and Salisbury, the capital. They are organized in the Board of Deputies, which represents religious congregations, Zionist groups, cultural and benevolent organizations and youth societies. Cecil I. Jacobs is president of the Board.
