Egypt’s Foreign Minister Mahmoud Riad hinted today that his country might agree to an eventual direct meeting with Israel along the lines of the negotiations on the island of Rhodes where the 1949 armistice agreements were worked out between Israel and the Arab states.
Mr. Riad spoke to newsmen after emerging from an 80-minute meeting with Secretary of State William P. Rogers. Asked if Egypt would accept a meeting with Israel on the Rhodes formula, he said a peace settlement could be concluded in that way “if the Israelis make it clear that they are renouncing expansionism.” The 1949 armistice was worked out by UN mediator Dr. Ralph J. Bunche. The Arabs and Israelis remained in separate rooms throughout most of the negotiations but met at the final stage to sign the armistice agreements.
