The Jews of Algeria should have the right to decide for themselves whether they wish to be French or Algerian citizens in an independent Algeria, Pierre Mendes-France, former Premier of France, told a packed press conference here today.
Commenting that Algerian Jews were “truly in a unique situation,” the former Premier said that on the one hand, Algerian Jews considered themselves as natives of Algeria, having lived there for centuries. On that basis, he said, Algerian Jews felt they should have the right to live and work in Algeria, like all other Algerians. On the other hand, he noted, there have been since the Cremieux decree deep ties between the Jews in Algeria and France.
