The far-right Republican Party, headed by a former SS officer, has qualified for $1.5 million in public funds as a result of its unexpectedly strong showing in Germany’s regional elections two weeks ago.
The announcement was made this week by the Stuttgart-based government office that calculates the legally mandated allocations to political parties based on their election performance.
The Republicans polled 10.9 percent of the popular vote in the federal state of Baden-Wurtemberg, compared to 3.2 percent in the 1990 elections for the Bundestag.
The party, which had only 2,300 registered members there before the elections, compiled 538,866 votes to become the third-largest political faction in the southern German state.
