Jacob Stein, chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations said today that Secretary of State William P. Rogers, who met with Stein and two other Jewish leaders Friday in his office in Washington on the problems of Soviet Jewry, suggested it would be advisable there be another meeting soon between him and the three Jewish leaders soon on that issue. Rogers invited Stein, Max Fisher, the Detroit philanthropic leader, and Richard Maass, chairman of the National Conference on Soviet Jewry, to meet with him on Friday.
Stein said that meeting lasted about 80 minutes and that it was a “serious, working discussion, not just something to mollify the Jewish community.” The date for a second meeting, Stein indicated, was suggested as in about two weeks. It was indicated that, during the period between the two meetings, the State Department would have the opportunity to analyze the significance of the new higher exit fees the Soviets put into effect Aug. 3 for Soviet Jewish academicians.
