The 17th annual convention of the American Council for Judaism opened here today with a message from President John F. Kennedy, stressing that the “variety and strength of our national democratic character owe much to the ethical inspiration of Judaism.” The President added that “religion has played a great and constructive role in the development of American life.”
Henry S. Moyer, president of the Philanthropic Fund of the Council, which is an anti-Zionist organization, reported that “the truth” concerning the situation of the Jews in Morocco is somewhere “in between” contending claims. He said that “clandestine Zionist organizations” are conducting “a violent campaign against Morocco,” accusing Morocco of mistreating the Jews in an effort “to lure” the Moroccan Jews to emigrate to Israel.
On the other hand, Mr. Moyer declared, the Moroccan Government insists there is no inside ‘Jewish problem’ in Morocco and that Moroccan Jews are recognized as citizens on an equal basis with all others. “Actually,” said Mr. Moyer, “the truth is somewhere between the two.”
