Romania’s president backtracked on remarks that downplayed the Holocaust. In a statement sent to The

Associated Press, Ion Iliescu said he recognized the uniqueness of the Holocaust. The statement came two days after Iliescu told the Israeli daily Ha’aretz that “the Holocaust was not unique to the Jewish population in Europe. Many others, including Poles, died in the same way.”
