PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT DECLARED TODAY THAT “PHILOSOPHIES DOMINANT IN TOTALITARIAN STATES MUST NOT BE ALLOWED TO DISRUPT THE CORDIAL RELATIONSHIPS WHICH NOW EXIST AMONG PROTESTANTS, CATHOLICS AND JEWS IN AMERICA.”

THE PRESIDENT, IN A STATEMENT IN CONNECTION WITH THE TENTH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION OF THE NATIONAL CONFERENCE OF JEWS AND CHRISTIANS, EXPRESSED THE HOPE THAT “DIVIDED OPINIONS REGARDING SITUATIONS IN OTHER LANDS THAN OURS WILL NOT CREATE CLEAVAGE BETWEEN RELIGIOUS GROUPS IN OUR NATION.”

DECLARING THAT THIS NATION WELCOMES A VARIETY OF RACIAL STRAINS AND SPIRITUAL TRADITIONS, HE DECLARED THAT “WE PROCLAIM THE EQUAL RIGHTS OF ALL RELIGIOUS GROUPS WHETHER OF THE MAJORITY OR OF THE MINORITIES, AND FIND OUR UNITY IN A COMMON CITIZENSHIP.”

THE STATEMENT OF PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT, WHO IS HONORARY CHAIRMAN OF THE CONFERENCE, WAS MADE PUBLIC BY DR. EVERETT R. CLINCHY, DIRECTOR OF THE CONFERENCE, ON BEHALF OF NEWTON D. BAKER, PROF. CARLTON J. HAYES AND ROGER W. STRAUS, CO-CHAIRMAN, AS THE KEYNOTE OF A MOVEMENT FOR INTER-FAITH “ROUND TABLES” THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY.
