President Roosevelt headed the long list of notables are and abroad whose messages of tribute to Rabbi Israel Goldstein, president of the consist Organization of America and of the Synagogue Council of America, for his services to world Jewry and to international inter-religious and inter-racial good will, are read tonight at the testimonial dinner in his honor culminating the celebration of his 25th anniversary as rabbi of Congregation B’nai Jeshurun, second oldest Jewish congregation in New York.
A gift of $60,000 raised by his friends in honor of the occasion was turned over to the congregation by Dr. Goldstein. It will be used for the expansion of the congregational activities, as part of an Israel Goldstein Anniversary Fund which, it is hoped, will reach $100,000. It was announced that Dr. Goldstein had declined to accept any personal gift from the congregation.
The dinner was held in the banquet hall of the congregation’s community center with the Rt. Rev. Charles K. Gilbert, Suffragen Bishop of the Protestant Episcopal locese of New York, Dr. Stephen S. Wise, president of the Jewish Institute of Religen, Father George B. Ford, advisor to Catholic students at Columbia University, Dr. James G. Heller of Cincinnati, co-chairman of the United Jewish Appeal, Judge Morris Rothenberg, president of the Jewish National Fund, and Dr. Goldstein as the speakers. Jacob Sincoff, chairman of the anniversary committee, was toastmaster.
