The American people, of all faiths, can be proud of American contributions to Israel’s political and economic security, Congressman Franklin D. Roosevelt, Jr., told delegates to the annual convention of the Manhattan Region of the Zionist Organization of America last night.
Rep. Roosevelt said that the achievements of the United States for Israel proved “that we look upon Israel not as just a homeland for persecuted Jews” but as evidence of “what free men can do for themselves.”
Dr. Joseph Tenenbaum, who was re-elected president of the Manhattan Region for a second term, sharply assailed Secretary of State John Foster Dulles for what he termed a reversal of American traditional policy in relation to Israel. The convention sessions were also addressed by Leo Auerbach, Jacques Torczyner; Moses Torczyner; Abraham Krumbein; Judge Hyman J. Reit and Leonard Lifton, regional executive director.
Arthur Liveron, member of the Israeli delegation to the United Nations, asserted that “Israel is a cardinal factor in any workable system of peace and security in the Middle East just as the Middle East itself is a vital factor in any global arrangement for similar purposes.” The Israeli leader warned that “to ignore Israel for the sake of winning the eternal goodwill of her Arab neighbors is not only a naive enterprise but a dangerous one.”
